The government of the Republic of South Sudan’s principle instrument for the undertaking of biodiversity management and conservation in the country.
A report and action plan produced by the South Sudan Ministry of Environment and Forestry, with support from other national ministries, UNEP, and national and international partners more widely. Prepared during the recent civil war, the report provides mostly up-to-date information including the challenges faced by the country in the management of its wealth of biodiversity. It highlights the problem that war and underdevelopment have played in all respects.
The utility of the report is that it presents a form of baseline, a reference for the status of biodiversity and conservation, as well as a vision for the future. Many advances in knowledge of the biodiversity in Western Equatoria, which was being undertaken at the time of the report’s preparation, were not included. Similarly, the report’s data will not be able to reflect the impact of the illicit extraction of resources during the civil war.
