@ForumArmsTrade @connor_echols @RStatecraft This from the DoD in 1991 after its first major combat use in Iraq. Civil society and the media have unwittingly supported this "proponency", in turn challenging work to stigmatise the weapons.

@ForumArmsTrade @connor_echols @RStatecraft DU is not particularly hard, though it is dense, and CHARM3 is overmatched by more modern Tungsten rounds. Lionising DU's effectiveness has always been strange, can't recall folk doing the same for landmines and cluster munitions.

Been a while since depleted uranium has made the @BBCPM news. We encourage journalists to look into this issue with the ageing weapons' use by date.

The UK will send its 120mm CHARM3 depleted uranium tank ammunition to #Ukraine, alongside its Challenger II tanks.

H/t to @declassifiedUK for spotting yesterday's PQ https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2023-03-06/hl6144 CHARM3 is not a silver bullet, or great news for #Ukraine... 1/9

The problem for @DefenceU is that @DefenceHQ's offer is for dated tanks that don't fire NATO standard ammunition, and whose bespoke APFSDS anti-armour ammo is past its sell by date. This in addition to the contamination issues that its use will create on Ukrainian territory. 9/9

There is a tungsten export version of the ammo that is used by Oman, this was due to be removed from the UK fleet in 2006. 8/9
