COVID-19’s impact on environmental governance in Iraq may have a lasting impact on its environmental stability.
The COVID-19 pandemic is a human health crisis that adds to our planetary health crisis. This paper investigates the direct and indirect environmental impacts in Iraq, set against the existing situation of environmental sustainability in the country.
Background research was carried out between December 2020 and February 2021. It included a comprehensive literature review supplemented by interviews with experts from the national Government, international organizations, donors and civil society organizations. The report finishes with a series of policy recommendations for the Iraqi Government and the international community over the short and medium term to ensure that post-COVID-19 recovery plans take into account environmental sustainability priorities in Iraq.
