The need to improve environmental standards in mine action is particularly clear when working in areas with rich or sensitive ecosystems. Kendra Dupuy and Linsey Cottrell report from their field visit to Colombia and on the challenges mainstreaming faces there.

Beginning our environmental mainstreaming in mine action journey

Blog, Project One, SliderBy ConEnvObsJanuary 8, 2020

Clearing land mines and explosive remnants of war can also harm the environment. In a joint project, CEOBS is working with Norwegian People’s Aid to try and identify how this harm can be reduced. Kendra Dupuy and Linsey Cottrell share their thoughts as they begin the project.

Been a while since depleted uranium has made the @BBCPM news. We encourage journalists to look into this issue with the ageing weapons' use by date.

The UK will send its 120mm CHARM3 depleted uranium tank ammunition to #Ukraine, alongside its Challenger II tanks.

The problem for @DefenceU is that @DefenceHQ's offer is for dated tanks that don't fire NATO standard ammunition, and whose bespoke APFSDS anti-armour ammo is past its sell by date. This in addition to the contamination issues that its use will create on Ukrainian territory. 9/9

Not only are these rounds past their sell by date, the DU is also contaminated with unknown levels of post-reactor products due to mixing of RepU with DU in the US, where the DU metal came from. DSTL found Tc99, Pu238, Pu239/240 and Np237. 7/9

It's worth noting here that the UK's Challenger programme has sought a new gun that wasn't tied to CHARM3, which is non-NATO standard ammo, for years. This is out of date stock in a world that takes a dim view of DU, as numerous UN resolutions attest. 6/9
