There’s no military solution to Yemen’s SAFER oil tanker crisis

There are calls for the UN Security Council to authorise a military-backed response to the crisis over the SAFER oil tanker off the coast of Yemen. We argue that not only is this unrealistic, it would also have long-term consequences for how the international community addresses the environment, peace and security.

The targeting of #RedSea shipping, and oil and energy facilities in #Yemen is creating toxic remnants of war that pose threats to human health and terrestrial and marine ecosystems. These threats will grow with any further military escalation.

The Israeli attack on port facilities in Hodeidah #Yemen resulted in a major fire at its oil storage depot. The fire and associated spills will have generated hazardous emissions to the air and substantial ground contamination with pollution to the marine environment likely.
